Stormwater 101 is built for storm sewer collection system crews, new hires, and the supervisors who manage them. It covers how a storm sewer system is designed, how it handles rainfall, and what it takes to keep it flowing.
New employees come away with a working knowledge of the system before they ever step onto a crew—what the components are, what the job involves, and what will be expected of them working alongside an experienced crew. Veteran operators get the design side of a system they may have maintained for years, which sharpens troubleshooting when a line isn't flowing the way it should.
The course also covers why a city runs two separate sewer systems and how their functions differ. Crews who understand that difference are the ones who spot illegal discharges and sanitary overflows into the storm system, catch contaminants before they reach the ecosystem, and recognize the conditions that turn into street flooding during a heavy rain event.
There's a reporting benefit as well. An operator who understands the system can describe a field problem to a supervisor in terms that get resources assigned to the right place, the first time.
